Compression on a 2F

I have an 85' 2F 60 168,000 miles with 140, 140, 110, 130, 60 :(, 140 psi on my cylinders. The engine idles rough and has a strong smelling (rich)exhaust. No smoke though. All of the plugs look good. No fouling on any of them. My first hunch is valves. Second hunch, rings. Any one else out there with a similar problem with a solution??

Were those compressions wet or dry?

Yep, you have to wet test: add 5 cc (a teaspoon or so) of oil and retest each cylinder. Fixing the compression means your rings were worn. If it stays the same, then it is burned valves or head gasket leakage. Partial improvement may indicate a combination. Make sure your valve lash is correct, since if that is way off you may see compression problems to some extent.

I added a few squirts of oil to the cylinder without any noticeable improvement. Based on your experience it sounds like valves or a gasket then. Would this also cause the strong exhaust?

I'm thinking the same thing. What exactly is the "strong" exhaust. Could it be antifreeze? (since your plugs aren't fouled, I am guessing you're not running that rich).

Hadn't thought about antifreeze. That would be a good possibility though if the gasket was bad. The exhaust does have sort of a sweet smell to it.

do you get any white smoke from the exhaust? Many times this can indicate coolant in the combustion chamber. (but you said no smoke)
Are you loosing coolant? If not, your HG *should* be ok I would think.

how long have you had it? any idea of it's valve adjustment history? That would probably be a good place to start.

rough idle might be unrelated to your low compression cylinder (although others more knowledgeable would know better)

does it run OK other than rough idle?

klunky is right one here...

If the exaust smells 'sweet', are we losing/using coolant?

How long have you owned the vehicle?

When was the last time the valves were adjusted?

Have you had any other issues, noticing that the needle on the temp gauge is a bit higher than where it has ran in the past? Anything?

Good luck!

I have only had my rig for about a year and use it basically as a weekend at the cabin vehicle. The truck was from Wyoming and I am in PA. I thought the altitude may have had some effect on it but I am not sure. I don't know when the valves were last looked at and don't know about the coolant consumption. I will definitely check both though.
