3speed gears to 4 speed case FJ40

im pondering what to i purchased a 3 speed case and gears but looks like it might be a 69 case supposly the brittle one , i have my 76 FJ40 4 speed case got it out today what a pia it was leaking like a sive in fact there was less than a handful of gear oil in it when i drained it , do you think i would be safe to run the 3 speed case as is i have the transition gear and can get the bearing ect .. or how hard to put the gears into the 4 speed case i have never done this before but am willing to attempt anything , well almost anything, thought i would ask the people who know TIA

It would depend on what tranny you have. If you have a toyota 4sp, fix the 4sp case. If you have a 3sp or a GM 4sp, use the 3sp case. While the early 3sp cases may be brittle, it doesn't mean that they are especially weak. They tend to crack when the later ones merely stretch.

Cool i have

rig is a 1976 FJ40 Built Chev 350 Stock 4 speed, tranny lockright rear eaton LSD up front almost a spool its so tight , i was hoping to go to the lower 3 speed gears to get a little lower gearing off road , so what your saying is the 69 case should be ok , that would save a lot of hassel , TIA

Use the 69 T-case and buy one of those T-case savers. I think that Poser has some for sale.
