That's a pretty broad question.
Are we talking best for pulling, best for economy, best for all round driving.... ?
I like my '82 BJ60 for all round driving. My Dodge Cummins I used to have can easily out haul the 'Cruiser and dad's Jetta get's better mileage than both.
The Cummins has too much power on slick roads, the Jetta's too small for a family and I just like my diesel 'Cruiser 8)
FYI, I don't know too much about diesels, but have a very good opportunity to get into one for the wagon. Nothing that is going to happen overnight, but researching options does help.
Thing is I'm going to build it to spec for Emergency Response, but still have it for regular use. I'll know more after we understand our applications.
Just shooting for some diesel options that would work wonders in an FJ45 Wagon.
The Toyota diesels are the cats meow, they are compact and can easily made to make the same kind of power the old gasser did. Although the torque will be higher, the 1HD-FT with a intercooler and propane injection will pull very well.
Performance is always a trade off for longer life, these engines can outlive the gassers by almost twice if carfully maintained.
ah, mechanical pump cummins, in line/ p pumps. 94-early 98 12 vavle engines, later yrs prefered. I have a 93 rotary, but it is somewhat limited in the power adjustablity.
go for the p pump engines, upgrade everything to 1 ton stuff or larger. and have fun.
also the 4bt works a bit the same, the earlier rotary pump is similiar with the 93 and earliers, and the inline is close with the 94-98.

Your roommate works at Garrett? What does he do there?
Yep, that's it. I helped my buddy put on a Banks turbo housing on the ol' holset in his dodge 2500 cummins. We actually did the swap in the parking lot here at school last fall :
yeah that is a broad Q, but i think i have an engine that fits a broad bill. before i name this engine i would like to make some points about my diesel preferances.
my preferances are a mid to low revving diesel, toyotas diesels are great but revvy, i want my diesel torque under 3000rpm.
the electric stuff is good, but i want to be able to service it easily in less than desirable conditions, thats the whole beauty to the land cruiser in the first place.
the cummins 6 is a great engines with all the above desired except size and weight, its a big torque monster just waiting to rip apart a cruiser.
my "prefferred" diesel would be the isuzu 4BD1T found in the NPR trucks, a good sized 4 cyl with HP and torque slightly above the 2F in stock trim and about the same weight. the downside is price and adaptability.
If you watch truck-trader, you can find wrecked NPR's for fairly cheap, but adapting one would be a major pain. If you don't mind alot of noise and vibration, you can get a Frito-lay truck with a 4bt cummins, should bolt right up to a NV4500HD out of a Dodge. Pretty easy to tweak a 4bt up too 200HP and as long as your gearing wasn't too steep, might get close to 30 mpg.
well more info, including the phone #, and price and i will tell you how good a deal it is.
I know the dodge cummins pretty good, I own a 93, buddies own a 01, other is a 03.
I read and read and read, and study and study, and search and search, for anything cummins, diesel repowers, etc...
I want to repower somehing really bad with a diesel, be it a cruiser, or something else.
I prefer the cummins, as i know alot more about them, I know where to go to find parts, i come across more of them period.
I hear good things about the isuzu diesels both 4 cyl and 6 cyl, looked into them, but a huge lack of any information on these engines hurt thier potential, harder then crap to find here, dont have a clue on where to find parts. I also heard that an adapter off a cummins, both a SAE#3 will fit on these engines also? (just what i heard)
there was an SAE bell for the isuzu, but i hear they are no longer available. another engine i really like is the cummins 6AT, but it is no longer being produced so parts will only get more expensive, injector pump is already $1000. i will most likely run a cummins 4BT, a little vibration is good for the soul.

Hey, what tranny would you run with a 99 Cummins Turbo? I don't know what tranny is coming with the set up. I do know the engine has 44K on it, don't know what kind of mileage I'll get.
What's the best way YOU would go about putting this engine in a Cruiser? I'm looking to avoid all the headaches I had with my 40. >:(
BTW; is $700 a good price for engine/trans/transfer?

$700 is a steal for a good diesel with 44K on it! I'd go fo it in a heartbeat. The Cummins was the ONLY thing I liked about my Dodge when I had it.

The 3B is certainly not a "revvy" engine. I've driven one for over 15 years! They run out of breath at around 3000rpm and do their best work at around 2200 - 2400. Torque seems to max out at around 1900 - 2000 rpm.
I had a 2L as well for a few years but that was 5 - 6 years ago and it had no tach to know where you were at, engine speed wise. It was also a torquey engine. You could get stuck in the snow, step out and watch the rear wheels spin as the truck was idling in gear!
