sounds like a bad booster/booster issue. I had the same problem and as soon as I replaced it, my brakes were badass. I know if you search there is a thread about the proper way to test a booster... Fixed brake issues, installed kits in the rear. Come to find out the binding wasnt binding at all. I thought there should be mush in the pedal, but with them properly bled, theres no real mush, just a small bit, which made them feel like they were hitting something solid. Had rear drums turned, and disesembled the cylinders. What a PAIN IN THE AZZ!
Front clip is going into paint (inside parts) today. installing this weekend, will have pics up soon. After brake issues were resolved, took her for a REAL spin. Got her up to about 20 -25 and she is tearing it up! Woot! This is the first time I have ever driven an FJ40. Up until then, only a passenger in one. My family was watching her maiden voyage and all my girls really got a kick out of seeing that "thing in the garage" actually move! Especially my 3 year old. All smiles. ![]()

More Progress
Bolted up the front clip tonight. Test fitted stuff, made sure the wires all got to where they needed to go. Placed the coil where it was factory and not in the okie rigged location.
Now I need a longer coil wire... As you can see, I cut in all the painting inside the engine bay before mounting front end. And most importantly, Bezel mounted correctly...

I found out the hard way about stagnant air around a carb on my 71 Chevy pickup. Eliminated several bad sources of vapor lock, but still had problems. Felt the air flow around the carb, and it was inadequate. The dual electric pusher fans would keep the coolant cool, but would not push enough air to keep the carb from heat soaking during operation. Threw in the towel and installed the largest reverse rotation flex fan I could find locally (engine is a '95 454 with serpentine belt, thus reverse rotation). That moved more than enough air to keep the carb from heat soaking. (The electric fans are now off most of the time, and are auxillary fans now.)

another update
Rear fender wells prepped primed, and painted, bedliner installed.
Sent seatcovers in to have new ones made. Was going to do jeep seats, but decided to stay OEM. Worked on Jump seats, got one installed, the other needs some finishing work, then it will go in. Got the rear amby doors completed by installing new lower door skins on both. Working on sides of hardtop and get those cleaned up. Lots of stuff happening. I'm hoping to wrap it all up in late Oct. __________________ Yahsoo! 1969 Breathe FJ40 Currently in the middle of a ground up... 1976 Olive FJ40 finished as of May 2008 Faster Track Resto

What did you use to apply the bedliner?
BTW, your 40 looks great. My 40 is the same color and year. __________________ Jayson 87 FJ60 (R.I.P.), 84 FJ60, 76 FJ40, 97 Honda RS125R, 97 Yamaha TZ250 |

First color coat is on...
Shot the first coat of color about a half hour ago...
Used mineral spirits after reading some links here on MUD... Mineral spirits is the ONLY thing you should use to thin this stuff... It layed down with almost NO orange peel. It should settle out very nicely! The photos show after one light first coat. I will then be applying two additional coats getting heavier and wetter with each one. Will wet sand with 600 between first two coats, then wet sand with 1500 and buff the final coat. Before I shot the first color coat I wet sanded all the primer with 400. Took about 3.5 hours from begin sand to finish of first coat. Now the pics... __________________ Yahsoo! 1969 Breathe FJ40 Currently in the middle of a ground up... 1976 Olive FJ40 finished as of May 2008 Faster Track Resto

Came out pretty good. Did get a little water spurt towards the end which I will have to deal with tomorrow. Going to run both compressors with a better water trap tomorrow.

Coming along...
Got backed up on some extra body work I wanted to take care of. So I stripped a couple areas and made sure it was perfect.
Also decided on painting interior. Looks good I think. Next up are the doors, (which I have started on) and then shooting clear. I'm using LIC-30 Valspar binder for the clearcoat. Dries to a rock hard finish and looks great. __________________ Yahsoo! 1969 Breathe FJ40 Currently in the middle of a ground up... 1976 Olive FJ40 finished as of May 2008 Faster Track Resto

That is very impressive! Love the color and also the bedliner material.
Question. What are the holes for near the fins on the hood? __________________ 76/4 FJ40 Rustic Green, Ford 302, C4 Auto, EDL 1406 Carb., 35" WC's, '76 2F going back in soon as 302 dies. 76/4 FJ40 Freeborn Red, 2F-087055 |
