Electrical/Starting Problems Please help

I have a problem, took the pig to get some food two nights ago. When i came out of the store i turned the key over and all i got was a click. Then i turn it over again and it started fine.

So i drove it home and parked it for the night.

Side note: it was raining and freezing raining all evening and into the next morning, lots of moisture.

Next morning i went out to start it up and all i get from then on is the clicking noise. I turn it over click, turn it over click. So i check my battery, its fine and has 12volts.

My first thought is it could be moisture in the distributor, my old rig would die or not turn over if there was a lot of moister in the air. On the old rig i would just dab a rag in the distributor cap and it would dry up and start. That didn't work with my current problem.

I'm at work now and have been reading a few past threads about similar problems. Tonight i plan on checking the battery ground and makinig sure it has a good connection.

Does anyone else have any suggestions for checks i can run and or the order of checking.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appriciated.

Thanks

The distributor will not have anything to do with weather or not the engine turns over, only if the engine is turning over, does a wet distributor enter into the equation.

Verify the connections at the solenoid on the starter motor. There is a large cable from the battery to the solenoid. Make sure that is secure. Also, there is a wire that comes from the ignition switch to the solenoid. Make sure that is secure as well. This is a smaller wire compared to the wire coming from the battery.

Typically the connection at the starter solenoid for the switch wire is a push-on style connector that can sometimes get corrosion in it and cause this issue you are describing.

It could be a number of things:
1) battery or battery connections are bad. Just because it reads 12V doesn't mean that the battery is fully charged. An intermittent bad connection won't pass enough current to turn the satrter motor.

2) Bad solenoid or bad starter brushes. Jump across the two large terminals on the solenoid ot see if the motor will run. If so, the solenoid may be bad. If not, the morot brushes may be worn out. If it happens again, try whacking the side of the motor with a hammer. Sometimes this is enough to get the brushes to seat in order to start the engine.

Also try cleaning and or replacing you battery cables, This was the problem on my cruiser. My cables were corroded from the inside out, making the power that got to the starter very weak.

Thanks to all. I found a ground around the starter and it was loose. So i cleaned it tightened it and put it back. Started up first crank. Really makes me want to take a day and fix all electrical connections.

Can say how pleased this makes me.

Thanks again

Also, check the connections at the coil + & neg terminals. Check the clamp of the coil to the fender, this is the primary ground for high-voltage discharge to he block. All old fj40's & fj55's (etc) should have a ground strap from this point to the firewall, then to the block , then to the Neg frame ground point.
