Operation Sinus Infection (A build up of Snotz)
Here is "Snotz" a 1963 FJ40. I have abandoned my 74 project in favor of the 63. Most of the parts will make there way from the 74 to the 63.
Parts coming from the 74 are:
TBI V8
auto trans
dual minis cases
spring over
Cruiser front axle
mini truck rear
4 wheel disc
GM booster/master cylinder
power steering
Prelude bucket seats
GM tilt column
new wiring
Still need to work out:
fuel delivery
full cage
and a little trimming here and there.

And to think, someone made a conscious decision to paint the poor thing that color.
I think I'll keep it!!

I like the color. <- bouncing snot
Are you just going to swap the body onto the '74 frame? Looks like you've got a lot of work in that already.
Save those front locking hubs for the hall of shame. Husky hub ............ probably the worst hub ever built.

Cruiser Nerd,
You have a good eye, yes, those are Husky hubs, I have never seen them before. I was given a set of Warn hubs in a box of misc. parts. The 74 frame and tub (less the hood/fenders) will be sold. I will be posting in the for sale section the parts I intend to sell.

I finally got about an hour and a half on the cruiser today. Removed the heater, horns and some misc. parts. I also removed some handy work performed by a PO (who was not very handy) and washed out about 100lbs. of dirt and mud from the frame and fenderwells.

Well today the project may have changed course. While removing more of the PO fab skills, I have uncovered a pretty substantial crack in the frame. It was partially repaired with some square tubing and booger welds. When this thing broke the entire shackle came off. So, do I repair the frame, or just do a body swap to the 74 frame and call it good? Here are some pics........

Don't see any pictures, but there are a lot on this board who would weld, but personally for me I would swap to the other frame since I would not trust my welding job.

The crack doesn't look that bad to me. At least it's in an easy place to get too, i'd probably just weld it up, maybe box the frame in and add on a plate to the outside of the frame if your not comfortable with just the weld. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Not sure of your view on shackle reversal, but I would have no problem fixing that crack, and the shackle reversal would take care of beefin up the outside of the frame rail just box the inside to match your Saginaw steering Just make sure you V-cut the crack and make sure it's nice and clean to get some good penatration between the crack

Howdy! I would grind down a little over the crack on both sides and then weld it back in, from both sides with my little cheap Chinese MIG I got at partnswap 20 years ago. Leave it pretty smooth and then you can add a litte angle/channel on the inside, out of site, to beef it up if you want. I did this on a 51 Chevy farm truck that had the Marmon-Harington 4x4 setup on it. Neat old rig. Frame was cracked out like a spyder web around the steering box. Farmer had boogered it with fence post and pipe. REally snotty. Ground all his junk off and groved the cracks on the outside enough for the weld bead to lay in. After doing almost as nice on the inside of the frame channel, I modified some channel to fit inside of the frame. Burned it in real heavy all around. Redrilled the mounting holes for the steering box, put it all back togther with some paint, and most folks can't even see the repairs. Took me a couple of weekends, but well worth it. John

Thanks for the input guys. Knowledge and experience, that's what I love about this board.
I am going to look at both frames and see what will work best for me. The end result will be the same no matter what, one will just be more work for myself.

The selling point for my 64 was the idea I wouldn't have to get caught up with any emission testing. With the SBC modification it seemed like a huge bonus. Good luck with the project

Yeah, smog exempt is an empty canvas on which to build.
Projektdotnet, Thanks, hopefully soon, one of these will be on the road again!!
I got a couple more hours in today removed the wiring harness, switches, instrument cluster and misc. bs from the interior. The motor maybe sold tomorrow, so trying to get a head start on removing it in the AM. As soon as I get my truck back from the shop, the tub will be going to sandblast. Then I will be deciding which frame to use.
Some pics from today.
