| front disc brakes for 71 Im sure you guys have answered similar questions a thousand times. But how long dose it take to put front disc brakes on an fj 40. And dose it really matter what year the truck is( the truck that you get the breaks off of) |

| I give the same answer every time someone asks this, which believe it or not, is about once per week.
Use all the parts off an FJ60 front axle. You will need to grind the inside of the axle bell just a tiny amount to fit the new birfs, but that part takes 5 minutes per side. If you are familiar with the Toyota solid front axle, you can do this swap in a Saturday.
A mini truck swap would be my #2 choice-it's virtually the same, but the FJ60 swap gets you ventillated discs and more cool factor.

Cruiserdrew, would I still need 90-95 4Runner brake calipers and rotors to make it stop a little better?

| I'm in the middle of my mini disc conversion. The time it takes is totally dependent on what you want done. meaning, if you want to or can reuse the existing parts or not. I am replacing the mini rotors with 89 FJ62 vented discs and calipers from a 81 4 runner. larger caliper with more surface area to rotor and of course the vented rotor should speak for itself. While your in there buy a knuckle rebuild kit and get the bearings with it. Cruiseroutfitters had the best price when I bought my kit. It's taken me almost 2 months now because It is not my DD, and I work on it only when I have time which is about 2 nights a week if I'm lucky. There are a few posts out there with alot of info, you just gotta search, search and search again. feel free to hit me up if ya need more info....

How big a tire do you plan on running?
The 4Runner caliper has four equal-sized pistons and provide more pad clamping power to the rotor....

Why is there a tech link saying V6 runner brakes are better
Steve,
I'm going to run 36s on my rig.

| i got the MAF frony disk conversion kit of my 71 it comes with everything and i had the drums off and the rotors on in a half a day. it was a complete bolt on kit and after a couple of days of driving around what a great improvement this has to be one of the best upgrades out there. good luck |

Do yourself a favor and do not spend $750 on the MAF kit. I like MAF as a company and have ordered from them several times, but this kit is a mistake in my opinion. While you do get new bolt on parts, you are stuck with the much weaker coarse spline birfield. With the FJ60 as described, you switch to the updated fine spline birfield, which is good in itself, but size wise, you can now run the super strong Longfields when you have more money. You also get stronger and beefier steering arms, much stronger hubs, standard wheel bearings etc.
Expenses-
Complete FJ60 front axle-$200
Loaded Calipers at Napa (turn in cores)-$150
New soft lines- $20
New Rotors-$50 (I'll admit, I used the Chinese Tru-Stops and they've been fine)
Steel steering arm bushing(from MAF)-$25
Sell the spare long side inner- minus $50!
So for $450 you have mostly new Toyota stuff and a stronger front end. I can't see the logic in this MAF kit.

| Bought an axle that had the swap along with all new bearings and seals then sat unused as he sold off his 40. I put new brake parts on the axle (all 85 runner parts) and threw it under...man what a difference!!

| Here's an excellent article that explains the different caliper optons available. http://mywebpage.netscape.com/beanz2dt/index.html
I guess it's about time for another 'what's the best FDB setup' debate. I think it's been, what, two weeks since the last one?

Yup this is the reason I sold my MAF kit for $600 here on MUD. It was a big mistake on my part to get the kit in the first place. When you're just getting into this addiction you're anxious to put on whatever parts that can make a difference on your rig. I had to step back and really look at what I wanted to do with mine. I wanted to run 36s on mine so obviously the coarse splines have to go because fixing an axle in your garage is one thing, but fixing it out on the trail is something I would really like to avoid.
If its your first time fixing or upgrading a 40, then you're going to make mistakes. In my case, expensive mistakes, but that's why you should read up some more and do ALOT of research. There's alot of people on here that have worked and owned these rigs for a long time. Take advantage of what they know.
As for Man-A-Fre, they're a great company. What you're paying for with them is convenience. They source the parts and all you need to do is have the green. Same goes for SOR.
I'm going the FJ60 route myself, but with 4Runner V6 calipers and Longfields.

| x2 on what Silicon just said. I have the MAF kit on my 71. Honestly, it has been awesome, and I really appreciate the better braking over the original drums.
However, I am upgrading the whole axle to longfields, FJ60 outers, etc...MAF kit will be going away. Had I known 4 years ago what I know now, I would never have gone the MAF route, but, live and learn.....
Having said all that, I will be selling the MAF kit sometime in the next few months. Keep an eye out....

| I got all excited when I saw the MAF kit, it's bling for the cruiser. Then I read some more and found out my coarse spline birfs would break with the setup I wanted to go with. I still have their rear disc conversion kit, but the front setup was a mistake on my part.
My MAF FDB kit was still in box. I sold mine with a front service kit with wheel bearings, all for $600 here on MUD not too long ago. Nearly $1000 worth of stuff for %40 off. Yeah that hurt. But right now I bought an FJ60 complete front for about $300 and V6 4Runner fron calipers and brake booster/master cyl for $120 on Yotatech. All I need know is front seals and bearings. I'll still be way under $750, until I order Longfields
