I just put a basic Pertronix kit on the straight 6 in my 65 Falcon wagon last weekend.Cold starts way easier, idles smoother, and has maybe a little more power.Way easy to install too.
I paid about $80 with tax.I have seen it on the net in places for as low as $65.

I would suggest swapping out to the Toyota electronic ignition... found on 78 and later fj40's and 60's.
Waterproof, Toyota, drop in, electronic...
One of the best mods I have done to the 40 hands down, picked up quite a bit of MPG with it.

Where can one find the Toyota set-up? On all 40's and 60's 78 and newer? Any idea if it's available new? Part number? Thanks. ......Steve

There is some info in the Tech section by JimC, if I remember you need the disy from a '78 or '79 (small cap, electronic). After that it goes to a big cap I believe, then you will need the side cover too that has the indentation. Ignitor and coil can come from any LC with electronic up to '87. I think I used on out of a Pickup once too.

Thanks. I actually just read through the FAQ and bookmarked a couple threads to read through when I get some time tomorrow. I was trying to find electronic ignition a while ago but thought I was out of luck with my 77. Cheers. ....Steve

I have one from the australian company dick smith electronics, worth about $50AUD from memory, spent the time to build the kit with attention to detail and installed really easy, also make sure you waterproof them well, silicone any holes etc. instantly improved my ignition, it went from running rough and difficult starting to starting easy and a nice even idling sound, purrr
i highly recommend it, worth every dollar.

There is a pertronix kit for the 1977 distributor as well.

FWIW, I got my electric Dizzy and ignitor from Jim Cs parts box. I did not need to use any different side cover, Its the small cap Dizzy. You need to make a few electrical connections but nothing major.
Easy swap in.
This was from a 79+ Fj 40 I think, going into a 1975 2F motor.

I'd go with Pertronix....works great and extremely easy to install. I've put it in on an old Ford and my father-in-laws cruiser. Makes a big difference on starting. Also, don't have to worry about adjusting the points or cleaning them.
If you upgrade to a star, Mark's is having a special on the pertronix kit. Just do a search in the for sale section and you should find it. Great way to support the board and get a great deal.

I put a Pertronix in my 76 FJ40. Easy install. They do recomend that you upgrade the coil. Most Napa type stores carry them. It's the same kit they use in the Toyota forklifts with the 2F's so it pretty common.

This is a good deal from Mark. Especially since he is Mr. Old School, if he thinks the Pertronix is good, then I'll bet it's great.

You're better off calling him. He may not check on this thread for some time. I always have better luck calling than sending a PM or replying in a thread and expecting an anwser.

Also, check out his website. He has some great stuff on there. His collected stories and FAQs section are really interesting. Might keep you from doing certain mods that others swear by.
