I got it for about $80 but did not have to ship it because I got it from Poser and he lives about 3 hours from me and I just drove down and picked it up... if you are looking just post in the parts wanted section... that is how I found out Poser had one.

got about an hour or so on the cowl last night... while the primer was setting up I was able to block sand what I had primed before.. found out I have a few more places to put a little mud... not much this thing is in really good shape.

After the primer was set up I put the cowl on its front and got everything under the dash and all those really difficult spots really well, put about 4 coats on there. Just kind of cleaned up the shop as the coats were drying..... nothing special... good thing I did not have much painting to do, it was about 10 degress below zero out so I could only run the fan about 5 min then I would have to shut it off because it would suck all my heat out....

One of my friends is going to help me weld up those holes on Thursday so I am bring the cowl to his place tonight so it can stay warm in the shop.

here are a few pics (I just put the speedo and glove box back in there to see what it looked like again)

Any reason to not just leave the POR 15 as the top coat and not bother with the Chasis Black?

POR 15 it self will get a chalk film on top when UV light (or sun) hits it... so that is the only reason really... some would say the frame is ok because it will not get direct sun light but I did not want to take a chance...

last night I brought my cowl to a friends dads shop and we welded up the holes from the antenna.... He has one of those really cool shops like you see on tv, all the tools, super clean and just a great time... we worked on my cowl for about 45 min and then we had a few cocktails and put in a few shocks in the 71 beetle he is working on... a super nice car... should have got some pics to post. the only ones I got were of the welds.. it needs a small amount of putty but what does not on these things. I am very happy with how it turned out.

tonight I spent about an hour or so putting a coat of mud on so I can sand it right away when I get home in the evening.. I also spent time getting the cowl joint ready for the alum body.

Eli can you look at my pic and see if this joint looks like what yours did? any one else give me some advice?

yea that looks like its right. you just want it to be able mount that tub as close as you can get it....so if its smooth like the rest of the door jamb (looks like it from the pic) then you should be good to go.

ok on friday night worked for about 3 hours on the cowl and body work... got it about done...

Saturday worked for about 6 hours on more body work on the cowl.. put the seam sealer on based on a post in Matts thread. put tape on the edge of the seam so I could put the bead of sealer down the middle and then use my finger to smooth it out.. turned out pretty good...

well if you have been reading my form then you know I have never painted before and you saw my first priming job... I went to the paint shop on friday and picked up my paint.... Olive Brown (or Olive Green which ever way you want to say it) color code 653, well I have to admit I did not know the color was the same as Matt's 45 he is doing, but guess it is... good thing I like the color alot...

so I was just going to get the cowl ready for the body shop who was going to paint for me... I was about done with body work so I guess I really wanted to see what something would look like after I painted it... I pulled out one of my old fenders and gave it a shot of paint.. adjusted my gun as needed..

Then I decided I would paint the firewall on the engine side... screw hauling this thing to the body shop right!!!!!

Over all I am very happy how it turned out... what do you think?

WOW looks like it turned out great! So did it all go on as expected? Harder? Easier? Runs? The pictures look great....hey quick question, did you have the ouside blasted to get the origional paint off or did you sand it...the reason why im asking is because my painter turned out to be a total shit, and screwed up what he had worked on, so im switching painters to a pro that does work on my moms new car, so I need to sand down the outsides of the front cowl....trying to decide if I should have it sprayed, or if sanding would be easier.

Thanks

Eli

Hey Man!

Yea I did have it blasted but the old paint was pretty bad... I think if I were you I would just sand down what you need painted... or are you going to take the whole cowl off and have it painted??? if you were going to do that then maybe I would get it blasted but other wise sand a way.. you dont need to get it off completly.. just smooth enough to paint. since it is newer paint.

Well it went ok.. I do have 2 runs one where the heater blower bolts up so not a big deal and one on the bottom on the inside, you will never see that one either.. so guess I know how I messed up there and I will get better with more experience I guess.. going to do the inside of the fire wall tomorrow and then the dash on monday if all goes as planned.. I will make sure to post up picks..

How much is that guy charging you to paint?

Well the first guy was charging $800 since he knew the guy who sold it to me...but has been cutting tons of corners and doing a crappy job, so my mom has this painter who does paint and bodywork for a living, and is wayyyy good at it, and he was way into the fact that I did a total resto, so he said he would try to keep the price close to what the other guy had it at, and just show me how to do the simple time consuming stuff that he would normally do.

I dont remember the brand but I just got it at the auto paint shop where I bought my paint. My old stuff that was in there was pretty bad so I just got it all out. Look at Matt's thread page 28 and 29 and he has a good description on there... I do know the brand I used is not the same as his, it came in a single tub and it was black in color as you can see from the picks. here is the link to Matt's page..

got the inside painted on Sunday, pretty much worked all morning and had to let it dry all afternoon... I want to flip this thing upside down now and get under the dash really well and in all the nooks that I could not get when it was laying flat. I also have to figure out how to get in the glove box and everything without getting a run... anyone know???

also after I paint (Urithane) can I or should I wet sand to get the paint more smooth? If so what grit paper should I use?

Here are some pics..

Got a new push rod in the mail today from Poser so I brought that to my engine guy... got to look at how things are coming along on that.... he has the block all cleaned up. ( he said it was really bad, that the PO probably did not change oil often) it looked great... going to be boring it out this week. Also saw the crank he has that all cleaned up, said he has to do some more grinding on that to make it good...

Wish I would have taken pics.

Well I made it back alive from my trip down south to see Poser.... it was a great time... we changed the seals and gaskets in my tranny and transfer case.... machined out the parking brake housing to accept a double seal... added a transfer case saver (painted CAT yellow ) about 4 -5 hours of work for Poser... I was the student and camera man really... not only did he have to work he had me looking over his shoulder all day saying.... "what are you doing now... why?" so I feel I learned alot

Poser posted a follow up on my original post so here you go...

http://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/131996-tranny-transfer-case.html

Also picked up a bunch of parts... got all the stuff for the back brakes... just have to order the loaded calipers then I should have all the parts I need for the disk converson...

also orded the parts for the front disc. conversion (still have to go pick those up next time I am down there) also got a new clutch kit, tail lights, light on/off switch.

Ended up staying down there at Poser's place.... had a few too many to drive home.... then I had a few more!!!! it was a great time!!!

here are the pics to prove we did work for at least the morning!!!
