Transfer output or shifter noises...???

The transfer case on my '76 FJ55 makes a slight(and not always constant) ringing/jingling sound. Wiggling the transfer shifter will make it stop, just not for very long usually. It's not a horrible sound, but fairly irritating. I know the front output bearing has a little play(noticed it while changing seal-but didn't seem serious enough to damage new seal right away so I'll just keep my eye on it...).

My '62 IH Scout's Spicer 18 made the exact same noise-just really bad and wouldn't shut up unless I actually held on to the shifter while driving.

I don't believe either the Scout or the 55 had/have this noise while 4wheel drive is engaged. Should I be wary of transfer explosion, or just try to ignore it??

Anyone dealt with this before??

Mine does the same thing. I'll just live with it.

Bungee cord around the tcase shifter to the trans shifter cane will lessen the noise.

You can take it apart and verify if the bushings are still in the pivot mechanism, and that the rubber bushing in the end of the linkage going to the tcase is not missing.

Both of these could be contributing to the noise.

POSER-I'm not aware of any rubber bushings down there so I'll have to get down there and check it out. Steverb-what do you mean by dust caps on output shafts??

Thanks guys.

Steverb...

You must be talking about the deflecters on the drive flanges?? Didn't know those could come loose...had both flanges off the T.C. about a month ago to replace seals- never noticed them being a seperate piece. Don't think that's the prob.(I don't know how I would check that unless it was so bad you could feel it move...) Sounds more like it's coming from the shift lever itself, or inside the front output.
