Fender Flares (REAR) Beating a dead horse

Ok so I've been looking at prices on fender flares and haven't really been impressed. I plan on eventually not street riding the 40 someday but for now it must stay road-legal. Utah has that stupid flare and flap law so the guy wouldn't even inspect it

Well I heard that if you get some conveyor-belt type material you can bracket it up under the body and if it sticks out far enough to cover the tire it works. Does anyone have pictures of their junk setup like this?

Also where would a good place to purchase said rubber be?

Try a surplus type place...old metal scrap/salvage yard, ship (industrial) supply place.
I've seen people do the flares you are talking about. Virtually indestructable if you use big enough washers. IMO they look like

How much tire sticks out past the body?
If its about 3 inches then you can use a TJ flare. THey are square like the cruisers. Take a little bit of trimming to get them on there though. I used to use YJ flares but went to TJ ones a few years ago cause they fit a bigger fenderwell better.

ive used lawn edging and washers works good cheap and can buy it anywhere last 2 trucks used 1/4 x4 '' bar stock welded to body and braced sticks out 31/2 " and take a lot of abuse tie it to running boards that are also 1/4 plate and rear 1/4 plate corner gaurds and it slides along trees and rocks no damage good luck however you go

Trying actually to do some other things with this mod. Yes I know it looks crappyier than making some real flares of some sort but There's a method to my madness on this one.

The rear ones line up nice and have lasted WAY longer than the "unbreakable" urethane flares I paid alot more for back in the 90s. They are also wider and accomodate a much larger cutting out of the wheelwell...the latter is more important when moving the rear end back or using 38s or bigger (both of which apply to my situation).

My cousins OLD "jeepin" club which happened to mostly be cruisers had some dudes that did what you are talking about. They'd rub up against a rock or tree and the flare would just fold under then pop back up when they were past it. The way they were mounted and the flexibility of the rubber made them virtually indestructable in normal trail use here in the NW.

my new Fj40 I picked up has friggen heep flares on it for the rear. I have 2 Jeeps,but this is the 1st thing I'm stripping off!
It has no place, on a FJ40 .IMO
Garden edge works well, but kinda fugly. Seen a guy use a track from a snowmoblie, look rugged and military looking and as wide as you want.

Since I'm going to be chopping up the body instead of spending large amounts of time fixing up a body that will be beat up (read: woody's 40) not too long into the future I am going to trim the body pretty far back there and will need something to be there for on-road use. I'll have to post some pics when it's done

Find a horse or ranch supply store. Buy a horse mat. It's a mat that's very strong and about 1/2 inch thick rubber kinda stuff. They are usually about 4x8 feet and should be around 25-35 dollars. You can cut it with a regular razor knife, but it takes a few passes. Anyway I think it should work for what you are needing. It's good and thick, so it should hold it's form, and one mat should be more than enough for two flaps.

a friend of mine in town here has some classy ones on his old parts rig, they're made out of tire tread, and attached with lag bolts, I keep meaning to get a picture, it's amusingly fugly, and probably tough as nails

I'm considering putting tj flares on my 40 and I have some questions. Do I have to cut the fenders to put them on? What modifications to the flare are required? Will I be able to clear 33" tires with a 2.5" lift and tj flares?

You have to remove the inner lip of the flare where it rides along the folded 1/4" of the fender well. Also you don't have to but it will look pretty funny if you don't cut the fenderwell back a few inches. I had the cruiser cutout flares from bushwhacker? and still had to cut about 3 more inches out to get the TJ ones on there. I used REALLY big stainless fender washers and it has worked great with all the rubbing against trees here in the NW. Rocks may be quite a different story though.
You'll fit the 33s no prob.
PS Notice the front of the cruiser flares drop down a few inches...the TJs are pretty much even front to back. It looks fine on mine with the steps etc but some cruisers it may not quite look right.

PS As for jeep stuff on a cruiser....he he.
I run JEEP wagoneer springs at all four corners.
My 8274 says JEEP right on the warn sticker cause it came as a factory option on a late 70s wagoneer.
My fender flares (already mentioned) are from a JEEP TJ and I previously ran (almost forgot this) the ones off of a JEEP YJ which are a bit more flexible but not made for as big of a fender well.
My rear seat is from a JEEP YJ
My rear tool box is a tuffy meant for a JEEP TJ
The list goes on but I'm getting tired...
