I am trying to gather some info on how to pull the outer rear axle race off of an early 1970 FJ55. FSM says to cut and then cut some more with a cold chisel, then heat up the new race to 300 F and pound on with a drift or pipe? I am wondering what others have used succesfully to install the race that sits on the early axle shafts? Looking for any techniques to do this. Problem is I looked at teh rear axle and it will be hard to get a cut long enough on the actual race because my grinder is not small enough. I can get about half way down the race but that's about it. Not sure how soft the race metal is and if it will cut easily for the other half of the race?
some info here I found:
Rear Axle Race Removal
any instruction on how others have done this is appreciated.
My second question is how to replace all of the other bearing races. The bearing basically just sits in the race, correct. So one needs to knock the race in with a block of wood or bearing seating tool? First knock the race into place and then just set the bearing in place, correct? In one place in the FSM for the rear axle it mentions driving the race and bearing into together but I would think this would damage the bearing? FYI, I am rebuilding both front and rear axles on a 1970 FJ55, minitruck up front and chevy monte carlo in rear.
