It appears that the PO must have hit the firewall of my FJ40 when taking out the engine. There's about a fist size dent where the transmission hump meets the firewall. I've tried beating it out with my body working tools but the metal there is really thick. So i was thinking about heating it up with mapp gas first then try knocking it out. Just wondering if this is a good idea because I don’t want to warp the metal. Should i just take a sledge hammer to it or is it worth a shot with the gas? Let me know. Thanks.
If you aren't familiar with the metal working and mapp gas technique, I wouldn't do it. I think I would try a few things first.
1. can you cut it out and weld in new steel?
2. I would try to pound it back into shape as best as possible.
3. I would try some more to pound it into shape.
Got any pics, maybe someone could help if they could see it.

I've always been a fan of the BFH method to reshape metal. Get a big hammer and hit it until it either moves where you want or breaks. If it breaks, you now have a reason to get that Millermatic welder you've always wanted.
Good luck.
