chevy drivetrain to 74 FJ40, im still researching

i want...
350 fuel inj / 4spd auto / and center rear, Rside front T-case.

what is the easiest/cheapest way to do that? i came across a '93 3/4 ton suburban and was about to close the deal when i decided to check the T-case. it was a Left side drop. my front axle is early 70s chev and the rear is early 70s ford.

is it easier/cheaper to
1. put fuel injection on an earlier chev 350?
or
2. adapt a different T-case to the 4L60E/700r4?

also, websites have said that 88?-92? chevy "V-trucks" have the same NP241 with a right side drop. what is a V-truck? is that a 4500 and larger?

reasons for wanting this drivetrain...
1....350 for power...3.9 doesnt make enough to turn 35s with 4.10s, body armor, and camping gear up moderate climbs (even in 2wd).
2....tbi for reliability on the steep stuff.
3....4spd for lower first, auto cause i dont like rolling backwards.
4....any T-case that will physically work.

FYI i have been running the stock T-case for a 74 FJ40 and a centered rearend for about six months now. this includes a spring over conv. the drive angle is steep but i havent had any problems. however, i dont want time to tell.

well trying to find what will work is starting to give me a headache. i came across a '99 chevy 1ton dually engine and tranny for $1400. its a 454 married to the 4L80E with 5k miles. i Really want it but only if its going to work. it was a 2wd truck and i have been to the AdvanceAdapters website to find what T-cases will work. some of the chart info for the 4L80E has been left blank.
http://advanceadapters.dirxion.com/?screen=1280&os=win
Are there any differences between 2wd and 4wd trannies? should i just bolt a NP205 to it and call it good? im sure the 454 is longer and the tranny length is more too, would this drivetrain lead to length/space issues?

You want a 1987-1991 4WD Suburban for a donor vehicle. Most will have a TBI 350, a TH700R4 trans with a nice low 1st gear, and NP208 transfer case with passenger drop in front.

i would have really liked to get the tbi350, 700r4, and np208, but i just took a$1400 bite in my checkbook today. i use my fj40 mostly for crawling and the 2.48 first of the 4L80E, the 4.10 axles i already have, and the 1.96 of the NP205 that is recomended (unless $2200 for an atlas sounds good) add up to a crawl ratio of about 20/1 (no Tcase underdrive available through AdvanceAdapters for 205). i was hopeing for 33/1 from a 700r4/4l60e 3.06 and np208 2.61. or even lower with a 4/1 kit on the 208.
so here are the obsticles i now have to overcome:
454/4L80e is aprox. 6 inches longer than stock eng/tranny.
headers might clear frame rails on the inside....if not, more cutting and welding.

anyone else interested in this, the 2wd 4L80-e has the speed sensor (i think thats what it was) on the inside of the case as opposed to the 4wd. (2wd tranny prefered if not using the Tcase it was originally married to).
the np205 that connects to it needs to be from a 79-85 chevy, 32 spline, hooked to a th400,....found in 1 ton trucks.

Also, the NP241 is basicly a Left side drop version of the NP208. there are some other differences but they will bolt up to the same tranny. i found more help by calling advance adapters 1-800 number than navigating thier website for each engine and tranny i was considering.

My measurement findings.
the stock drivetrain is aprox. 62 1/4 inches from the center of the Tcase Ujoint to the front of the drive pulleys. it is another 8-9 inches to the back of the grille. so removing the radiator and mounting it elseware could potentially give me 71 1/4 inches and keep the same rear output for the driveshaft.
the 454 / 4L80E is aprox 56" to the front of the pulleys. advance adapters said it would need to be mated to a NP205 (14") and have an adapter plate (4"). this would put me at 74".
so there are only 3 things left to do.
1) push the entire setup rearward 3 inches.
2) extend the hood by 3 inches.
3) see if seller wants to buy his engine / tranny back.

i missed an option in post #6,
4) flip the rear springs and gain aprox 4 inches. also cut the fenders so it doesnt look stupid.

why not buy a blazer since you no longer have a landcruiser except for looks and narrow it or put the toyota body on a blazer frame

my last answer was a little off the wall so last night i took a 400r from a 90 chevy 4x4 and the tranny adapter from an 85 blazer bolted to it . adapter fits np205 splines are the same coupler fits on but looks like output shaft will need to be changed or maybey cut off on the 400r also t case can be flipped and bolted on but wont work right so i think you can put a 205 on a 400r using factory parts then you will have overdrive and strength. 205 adapter is longer so this may cause issues good luck

What gearing do you have in the diffs & exactly what axles are you running?
I'd go for NP205 w/ a lower geaset (Lomax 3.1) or an Atlas2, not one of those chain driven cases NP??? It'll keep your drivetrain shorter with the auto tranny.
You can pull the drivtrain forward some with the 350, so that'll help too w/ the driveshaft angles. You'll have to change the valve body on the auto to a reverse manual.

i have 4.10 gears in the diffs, i bought the 454 and 4L80E so now its all about making that work. i beleive i only have 3 options based on the kits i have found. the NP205, dana 300, and whatever came with the 4L80E(i think NP261) and change to ford front axle. i will probably decide today. the NP205 has my first vote but we are waiting on the Tcase so we can start building and welding mounts and i would have to wait for the adapter from AdvanceAdapters. everyone talks of AA, but i came across another website. i will post it in the next reply.

NOTES, skip this message if you are not interested in Tcase specs, Transmissions, or websites about either Tcases or Trannies.
i spent hours on end trying to find what would work with the 4L80E so hopefully anyone considering this swap will find this page and save a little time. the engine/tranny/tcase is out of the FJ and ive been taking pictures. if i can make the 454 work, i will do a write up (wont just yet in case its a flop and i go back to the I6).

NP205 to 4L80E
if hooking up a 4L80E, the easiest thing that will bolt is a NP205 79-85, female, 32 spline, figure 8 bolt pattern, hooked to a th400,....found in 1 ton trucks
other 205s will work, but require machining/32spline adapter kits

dana 300 to 4L80E
4.25 inches $517 ...needs 6.5 slipyoke shaft from 2wd tranny
upgrade to 32 spline rear OUTPUT for fourhundred something dollars. adds 1.5 inches though

i need to measure the cone shaft....needs 6.5 inches for dana 300 for direct bolt up with 4.5 adapter, otherwise might need tranny work
