V-8 swap,exhaust options

I 've got a 76 FJ -40 doing a frame -off resto on it ,4-inch spring lift, putting a TBI sbc and Turbo 400 in it out of a van.Was wondering if anybody can give me a few tips about what kind of exhaust to put in it .I am putting on a mini-truck psteering setup on it so I have some clearance issues on the drivers side.Shorty headers ?

Texican's the wise one

Check this set up, posted by Texican.
I have collected all the parts and plan on installing it if I don't swap engine's over the winter.

These are pics of my SBC with Sanderson headers and a mini truck powersteering box in the stock steering box location. You will want to put your engine over toward the passenger side when mocking it up. I am using advanced adaptors engine mounts which have several mounting holes to choose from, and my engine is pushed all the way to the passenger side. I do not get any rubbing between the headers and the steering box, but it is close. I like my sanderson's. I highly suggest dumping a two into one exhaust set up, you will have plenty of power with the 350, you wont miss the 5 horse power that dual exaust might get you if you were to do fender exit exhaust which empties out under the doors, and if you keep the exhaust inside the frame rail you can run rock sliders (which I am currently building for my rig). Hope the pics help and good luck. I just got my cruiser licenced and running 3 months ago after a 6 year build up ordeal.

90% of the time a rams horn center dump will not work with the PU powersteering conversion, Unless you have your engine set back into the firewall or forward toward the radiator. The PU box is larger than the stock and it will hit the side of the manifold, even with the engine pushed all the way over to the passenger side. Stay away from over the frame headers that exit out the fender well. The # 5 exhaust pipe exits directly of the return line fitting with about 1/2 inch clearance. Cant get the fitting into the box. Downey off Road has always suggested the end-the plug rear dump manifold for clearance. There is a rams horn style exhaust used on 305 camero's and some early 80 pickups that looks like a rams horn but exits between the #5 and #7 exhaust port. The reg. ramshorn exits between #3 and 5. If you go with the camero style be sure to get the sparkplug shields that go with the manifold

rams horn interference

This is a link to the thread on Ram's Horn Interference. I posted a couple of pics there of the 717011 headers that Advance Adaptors sells.
