Need help with paint touch-up

Well, I've taken the plunge and bought my first FJ40. It has a number of chips in the paint that I need to touch-up to prevent rust (I live in Charleston, SC so any unprotected metal will rust almost overnight). I'm planning on repainting the entire vehicle next summer, but until then...

What is the best way to prepare, prime and paint small problem areas so that they don't become big problems? See the photos for an example of one of the worst chips.

You should be able to find little touch-up paint bottles at your local autoparts store in your trucks color, atleast thats where I find mine.

In order to properly fix that chip, even temporarily, is going to involve removing the rust from inside of the chip area which will likely open up the size of that chip necessitating a larger area that will need paint. Just painting over rust, however insignificant it may look, will shortly start peeling off again due to the rust continuing to spread underneath that paint. In the photo It looks like the paint has started to lift on the edges of the chip, all that lifted paint will have to be removed to get a clean surface to apply primer/paint to. You can use a 3M rust buster/"burnt hamburger"or some 120 grit sand paper( a bit crude but it'll work) to get rid of the rust, then use some wax and grease remover to clean the area up and apply primer followed by paint. Many autoparts stores can color match the color of your vehicle and mix up a can of spray paint in that specific color for you. The bottles of touch up paint usually come with a small brush attatched to the cap, just dab paint into the cleaned chip area, it doesn't look pretty but it'll hold over until you have the cruisers paint refinished.

Granted, I've had a few tonight - but that second pic looks like an airburst round or some sort of flak - If the paint is original than I would reconsider repainting it IMHO - especially if all it needs is a good buff and polish. Congrats on the new cruiser - any more pics of it?

Thanks for the comments. There are enough chips (and holes from PO's diamond plate) to make it worthwhile to repaint in a year or so. I figured that for know I'd just touch it up as best I can and enjoy it for a while before I start pulling it apart for a complete repaint.
