| 90wt gear oil substitute? With all the improvements on oil, what could be acceptable to use rather than 90 in my '75?

| Use 80w-90 GL5. It's available everywhere.

Welcome.
What are you trying to gain by not running 80W-90 gear oil in your old truck?

| I would try some things that look like gear oil and see how far you get, and what you learn. Some suggestions:
Karo syrup
Used motor oil
Maple syrup (winter only)

| we use a 75-90W mobil synthetic gear oil in some expensive gearboxes here, and it seems to drop oil temperature about 30 degrees, makes the gearboxes survive instead of dying once a year. problem is it's $8 a bottle. but you might find a better price on it somewhere |

| use Redline shockproof- choose the viscosity to suit your driving style - this stuff also works well with water in it - for some reason it doesnt break down the way std oils do. |

| I get Mobil Synthetic Gear Lube in the $5 bucket. $99.
Mobil 1 is more expensive. Supposedly it's the same stuff plus some limited slip additives. Since I don't have a limited slip, I don't use it.
