outboarding springs for 60 axles...

sup fellas,

workin on my frame today in preparation for putting some 62 axles under it while i also do a soa/sr...
i have some of proffitts 60series spring hangers that i am going to outboard and gusset at the very ends of the front frame rails (longer wb & sr).

quick question:
when andre and nutley talk 'outboarding' their springs, what is their reference point?
is it moved out from the stock location x distance or is it moved out from the edge of the frame x distance?

Tech Article: How to put 60 series axles under a 40 or 55 series

it seems to me in andre's writeup he measured from the stock location, but i'm having some trouble understanding exactly what he means...

i cut all the original hangers and mounts off the frame at the beginning of the summer, so i have no idea where the stock stuff was, centered on the frame, possibly?

i can go take a look at the 60 axles and get the measurements off there, but they're in storage right now, so if any of y'all could post up, that would be awesome.

thanks,
malphrus

aight...i went and measured the 62 front axle.

i used the u-bolt bracket on the top of the axle tube (i think this was only on 60series axles...) as the assumed location of the spring perch.

after calculating the distance between the perches on the axle i figured in the width of the spring hanger and determined the necessary distance out from the center of the frame.

here is what i came up with:

what do y'all think?
it seems like a lot of outboarding to me, ha ha, but in comparison to andre's, it's pretty close...

any thoughts?

oh, also, i'm using 60series spring hangers so they are almost 1/2 inch wider than the one's andre is using...

I did the math, 60 series axles are 70mm wider. So I converted to standard (because I only have a regular tape measure) and I can't remember what exactly it was but it was surprizingly a lot. Then divided by two and that is what I got for outbaording. The theory was to make my 55 (or a 40) "60 width." A lot of guys do it a little narrower particularly when doing a shackle reversal, so the rear shackle doesn't look so weird. So they fudge it more inwards than 60 series. Nothing wrong with that, but I outboarded mine exactly 60 width so a 60 axle, SOA, will always work if I somehow damaged the front axle... For a reference point, can't remember what I used but I used a few different places.. Hope it helps..! Andre

Also in the front if I remember correctly, yes it was centered. But in the rear (at least on a 55) I think it was a little more complicated. See if you can find your old spting hangers??
