replacing manifold gasket, exhaust

So I have to replace the manifold gasket, and was going to take off the carb to pull the manifolds out. I figured I might as well replace the carb gasket as well... but wasn't sure as it wasn't giving me problems.

1. Any thoughts? should I not fix what ain't broken?

Also, I have read a fair amount about double gaskets... etc. But it seems that is only if you are running headers. Mine is a stock set up.

2. Should I be ok with a single gasket?

3. What about the longer bolts? what do people think of those?

thanks in advance for advice

That is a good general rule, with the exception of when the part you are fixing is a piece of a larger assembly and the whole system is shot.

A single OEM or FelPro gasket should be fine.
Check the manifolds for warping and have them machined if they are out of spec.
You can remove the manifold with the carb still on it, but you are more likely to ding it if you are not careful.
Chase the threads on the studs and nuts to clean them up. Larger ones may be marginally better, but you risk breaking them off removing them or when torquing them down upon installation. If that misfortune happens to you, just weld a nut on to the remains and it will come out with a wrench.

So is it really that simple. Disconnect hoses and off with the carb and then off with the manifold? Or are there other elements that have to come out before I can access the manifold?
