Determining Engine Build Year

I recently bought a spare engine for my 78 FJ40. The guy said it was out of a 78 but I wondered if there is a way to determine the build year for sure. Is there some kind of number on the block that will tell the year, etc?

Aside from that, and it is a good link, you can find out the day, month and year the block was cast...
Can you see the numbers cast into the driver's side of my block? the first # is the year...so 1976. The second and third are the month, so December and the last two are the day the 18th.

Dec 18, 1976

Ed

EDIT: Should have read "driver's" not Pass

Credit for that info goes to Jim Chenoweth, not me
I don't know whether it holds true for F engines or not.

would the day/year casting numbers be in the same place for the F engine?

Point of clarification. My numbers were on the drivers side of the engine. Guess the PO didn't know much about this engine afterall. It was built in 75...not 78. The serial number is also on the drivers side up toward the front and is a very pronounced stamp. Didn't see any number on the passenger side of the block at all.

They are on my '74 F..........31215. I don't know about earlier Fs, though.

Can you post a pic of that? Where was it stamped on the driver's side?
Thanks,

Ron, I went back and edited my post from driver's side to pass side with respect to the casting date numbers, but the pic above of the serial number is on the passenger side between the dipstick and the starter. I've never seen a serial number on the driver's side. That's why I asked for a pic.

Mine is definately on the drivers side and resembles the picture which John0089 posted. I wonder if there was a change somewhere in the mid 70s of where they put the numbers. On that smooth place above the starter, i don't see a number unless it is so faint as to be obscured by gunk etc. I will try to post up a picture but right now I am on crutches and it is difficult to maneuver around in my garage to take a picture of it.
