| Is this an F or 2F?? Long story... Okay, don't kill me for this question, but I'm a little confused at this point.
Here's a little background. I bought a '70 fj40 about 4 years ago. I assumed that it had an F motor, becaus it is a '70. (I had previously had a '77 a while before that and I remembered the engine looking different.) Over the years I have ran into a few situations where I found it hard to get correct parts. IE: I had to get a slave cylinder from a '75+, and I just discovered that it has a 4spd style clutch even though its a three speed tranny.
So I happened to run into a guy today that happens to have owned it two owners ago. He tells me that he put a 2F in when he did the original restore.
So now I'm thinking it does have a 2F in it. Could someone help me ID this thing so I can finally sleep at night.
(PS - No making fun of the wiring, it doesn't have to look pretty to have fun in. )

Thanks!

| The number is on the rear of the block behind the distributor. My guess judging by the oil filter location....it is a 2F. Might be the 74 oddball year though. http://www.sor.com/2fengine.html lots of good info in the tech pages |

| It COULD be a 2F and guessing by the Valve Cover it looks like it. I wouldn't say that it's a 74 F motor cause it REALLY doesn't look like one, I have the 74. Good luck

| I think that the side cover with the pcv valve in front is from a F....but the oil filter says 2F
the engine ID number is the answer

| You have a 2F valve cover for sure, and the rest looks like my 1974 F engine. So, you have a 1974+ engine, the chances are extremely good that it is a genuine 2F engine.

Just like my '74 F and a half.
The engine ID will begin "F" or "2F"

| SWEET. Though I do feel like a dumbass.
I've been looking for a 2F to put in this thing for the past two years so I can turbo it and feel a little better about the whole thing, then use the "F" for my parts / future project rig ('68). When I get home I'm going to check out the codes to see for sure.
Thanks for the help!

Just like mine too, especially with the 2F valve cover. Engine number will tell you for sure, though.

| Ok, just sanded down the ID plate and ...... drum role please..... 2F 260368.
So it is definitely a 2F but I'm having trouble getting the exact year figured out. Does anyone have any other resources?
Makes me pretty pumped though, this entire time I had the engine Iwanted.

| F&1/2. That looks just like my 74 (minus the different valve cover)...the aircleaner and a few other things are pretty good clues...that Engine Number is gonna be what decides it for sure.
Edit: yoda-g3 posted before i could

Kinda curious though, where did you find that? I've been searching all over the place.

But when you look at the table in that link it doesn't have the exact number I pulled (260368) and the May '78 box just has a dash in it. So I'm wondering where and how he got May '78.
Oh ya ....

Well.....I extrapolated and interpolated
There is a way to find out it's exact birthday that I added in another post.
The information came from Jim Chenoweth, I just passed it along. Determining Engine Build Year

Sweet, thanks man. I just checked, but I can only make out the first three numbers, (header in the way) 804. So it looks like April of '78. Awesome.
Thanks!
