Shame. I used to be fawkin terrified of them as a kid until I stepped on a few that
didn't sting me but just scurried away and learned that they avoided me alot more vigorously than I was scared of them. When they do sting though it's unbelievably painful

and only because you're being stupid and not giving them time to get away (like running in shallows)
What you saw sounds like a spring tide w/ a tidal pool. Those are often cool and expose all kinds of critters/trap fish etc. We've been getting them ALOT down at the beach place which is always fun. Gotta watch out for jellies that get stuck though.
