The running boards are steps, nothing more. Expect nothing more from them and you will be fine. Get the maintenance fully up to date first. As to mods... save your $$$ for gas.  When I started driving 20years ago, it was about 65 cents a gallon (in South Carolina) and it was all I could do to keep my dad's old corvair on the road. I think cigarettes were about the same cost per pack as a gallon of gas... I can't imagine being a teenager trying to drop $500 a month into my truck...
