Thanks for the nice comments- I took way longer on this than I should have out of a desire to do it clean, right, and have
something safe! I kept my stock stering shaft- just cut it above the rag joint. I had the u-joint at the shaft connection welded on by a professional- again with keeping safety in mind.
The shaft was a 36" DD with a 1" bottom and 3/4" top. It cleared the motor mount and frame barely- but with some wiggle room.
I would strongly reccomend this shaft and u-joint set up for anyone doing this conversion- it's just superior to a solid shaft set up and the u-joints are trick sealed bearing units.
Now I am planning for the next mod- SOA-high steer.
