The best book will be the factory service manual from Toyota.
Checking to see if it's in 4WD is easy. Make sure the hubs on the front wheels are in the "free" position. Then reach under the truck and try and turn the front driveshaft. It it won't turn, you are still locked at the transfer case. If it spins, you are in 2WD.
