It gets shallow in all directions and land is 100' away or less pretty much wherever you go. That's the reason this is so 'wtf'; by the time you surface in that area you can handle just about any situation or draw the necessary attention to yourself. Any boat with a tower should have easily been able to spot him even if he was gone for 5 minutes and there was a current.
