Howdy! I am doing the same thing with an 87 freeby. You can add/subtact spring leaves to get the desired load capacity and flex, but the real limiting factor is the tires and the axle bearings. Put some "D" rated tires on it if your going to carry much weight very often. I am using my old BFG Krawler tires so I will have spares handy. They are only "C" rated, but I beat the snot out of them at 12 psi on the trail, and that's under a 6000 pound rig. I guess "where" your going to take it makes a difference too.
