VW diesel beetle comes to mind. And that toyota was just waiting to get a return in there hybrid investment before bring in diesels... Now I got pretty pissed when I hear this ...but then realized that we have more newer cars on the road per capita than any other country..? just a though.

If it weren't for the US EPA, there probably wouldn't be petrol-electric hybrids.
Mind you, if the GM engineers had done a better job of those early diesels, the US would also be in a better position.
