I'm pretty sure you're making this up. Even high-perf sportscars (and could care less about how easy it is to find) recommend 5w- or 10w.
0w is not hard to find.
My bet is they are simply trying to meet MPG goals. Try the thinnest oil possible for mpg's but still thick enough to lubricate properly.
If they did not have to meet those mpg goals, they would use thicker oil.
Also, I think it depends on how cold it gets in your region to what oil is best. If you get freezing temps, a lighter weight is better.
Our winters are about 50F so 'freezing' is not a concern
