maybe apple is a victim of its own success. if the guy in the tv store was telling the truth, only a very few factories manufacture lcd screens with samsung being the biggest. the screens of a given design are graded on response/performance after assembly and tiered. apple traditionally bought the very best testing screens.
of course, the more you sell the less very best screens you can get and the more design compromises need to be made to ensure uniformity.

Apple designed and built the Samsung LCD factory and gave it to Samsung. What they got in return was the right to run their own quality control program in the factory and pick out the best 10% of the displays for themselves.
This was about five years ago.
Something has changed.
