It has a reputation for this kind of crap - it's historically a very inefficient network protocol with a bunch of bullshit overhead that it does in the background. I suspect there is a memory leak somewhere in the code or something, but mostly it just doesn't scale well. If you have file sharing on and have a couple thousand files shared it bogs things down big time. It's very difficult to track down because it's intermittent and it doesn't show up as a separate process. I'm going to shut down file sharing on every machine and just leave printer sharing on.
