Do you thnk its because you pay attention more to the Tacos on the trail, or because the diff is stronger and the breakage goes to the axles, or because the trucks/4runners are heavier than old, or becasue of the extra 50-90 HP in the 2.7/3.4?
Ive just never seem one in person and the ones Ive heard of were 3.4L 4runners which could break a mini truck rear axle too.

Three, one of which was mine as I was letting off the clutch in my 40. Not even giving it much gas. 38.5" SX's and 140:1. The only nice thing was that the Taco diff is not a C clip unit, so I drove back to camp.
The second it snapped, a 14 bolt was swapped in..
Been beating the living daylights out of it since.
The 8.4 is also a misnomer. It is not really an 8.4 heck, it really is almost no larger (ring gear) than a 8" unit. But the cap supports are nice
