If I could find (or you guys could suggest) an in-line primer pump of some sort, I would eliminate the factory filter altogether, get a smaller micron filter (10 micron?) for the new Racor and hook the Racor sensor up to my dash warning light. However, I have no idea how I would prime the system without the factory housing.
I'm glad I got one with a 24 volt heater...I think it will help with cold morning efficiency.
