My behind the wheel experience? Plenty of it. But it's not something I feel the need to prove to you.
I think it is that torque is really noticable moving these trucks around.
1HZ has 15 extra horsepower but 23 foot pounds less torque than the 13B-T.
I have spent a bit of time driving both as well and I will have to agree with John that the 13B-T is definately feels more lively.
But let's face it...Really not the best two motors to compare, if you gave a 1HZ the same advantantages the 13B-T has (Direct injection and Turbo) you get 165hp and 268 ftlbs and well...er.. a 1HD-T.
Each has it's pros and cons. Consider yourself very lucky if you have either one powering you Cruiser.

Back to the topic of the Thread.. Get the motor hot and see where the readings go. Make sure you have lots of Amperage to spin the starter and see about trying another gauge for a second opinion.
You could also see about getting a diesel shop do a cylinder leak down test and see if that supports what your tester is saying.
And like Craig says.. the fact that if fires up and runs means it's probably not as bad as the gauge is saying.
