90% of seal blowouts on 4wds come from the breathers being blocked and as the diffs heat up they pressurise and blow out the seals. The other 10% are usually caused from mud and debris chewing out the seal.
grrl should take note of this from the man who knows the real facts... around here (back when you could drive in the woods and ford streams) all the four wheelers raised the height of the breather with a rubber hose... the problem about desert dust in the breather clogging it - not so much. As I remember it we used to put an upside down J in the top of the hose like an old snorkel to make sure water would not go down the tube.
