I definitely would go for the 5-speed if I were doing it again.
Idle seemed a little flaky sometimes. There was apparently an issue with the PCV system that took some time to wr0k out... I don't recall the precise problem, but a few people on the Mazda3 board were disappointed at Mazda's lackluster response to it.

May be fixed now, I dunno.

Mine was the pearl white. We waited about 3 weeks to get that color -- no other would suffice. They had to locate the car and make arrangements to dealer trade it with some place in Southern Illinois. At the time, dealer trading them was difficult, since they were flying off the lot at the time. There was a shortage, and when the dealer got one, they had a tendency to hold onto it for dear life.

The Pearl white was the only color that cost extra at the time, BTW.
