You will never get good mileage out of the 3fe. The Monteros are great rigs and would suit your purposes very well. They are not quite as durable as the 80, but the IFS will handle better on the dirt and is cheaper to maintain. For freeway mileage just do the math. If you go 1000 miles in the 80 at 13mpg it will cost you 230 dollars. (assuming $3 per gal) In the montero, the same distance will cost you 150 bucks.

You will save 80 dollars in fuel every thousand miles. I think that should cover any extra parts to repair...

The 80 will last longer. It is much stouter, and engineered to go 700k. (that is 161,000 in fuel....)
