I started with 2x4, but that chit is HEAVY (estimated, without outriggers, a 6' section of that weighed in around 60-75 lbs)....I was afraid gravity might wreak havoc on them over time and start to bend down. My whole slider now might weigh 55-60 lbs. IMO, the 2x3 is considerably lighter, still wide enough to support the weight of these beasts and my final product will have tubing for rubbing / steps...

If you went with a thinner ga tube, then 2x4 might be fine...but I only had 3/16 to work with for the price it was being offered (FREE), so I had to compensate accordingly.
