OK, I'll ask it, as I'm sure there are others wondering... This may sound like a real newbie question, but what's the difference between a pyrometer and just the regular temperature gage on the dash? I gather the temperature gage measures the coolant temperature and the pyrometer measures the exhaust temperature? Is it possible that, under certain conditions, the temperature gage will show an acceptable reading while a pyrometer may show a critical reading, or vice-versa?
Although my BJ60 is the first diesel I've owned, I've also driven countless Ford and GMC diesel trucks and vans, even a few full size buses and straight trucks. IIRC, none of them had a pyrometer, just a temperature gage. I've gotten along without one up until now, but by the sounds of it, some of you guys just wouldn't live without a pyrometer. How come?
