For those intereted in the Long Ranger Aux Fuel Tanks....please read.

Ok, I have been talking with Ric over at Long Ranger in Australia about the carbon canister issue.

Here is the skinny on what we have found. The canister is DIRECTLY behind the spare tire (along with the canister filter which is about 6 inches away from the actual canister.)

I have the repair manuals from Toyota (4 VERY LARGE books) and have traced the 4 items on the canister.

The canister obviously needs to be moved to be able to fit the tank behind the spare.

Here is the email I wrote to Ric concerning the moving of the canister. Any additional ideas beyond those I wrote in my email would be VERY helpful!

BTW do earlier series LC's have this same canister and has it been moved before on other models?

Ok, I had the LC on a lift today and here is what I found.

The Canister is DIRECTLY behind the spare. Plus there is a little module, the canister filter, near it (within 6 inches) that need to be moved with it.

There are 5 things that come out of that canister.

1) Air Inlet Line which attaches to the canister filter. So that is obviously not a big deal.

2) Vent Line hose, which from the repair manual, goes into the top of the main fuel tank. This seems like a regular pipe we can splice and lengthen.

3) Purge line hose which connects about 12 inches away from the canister to a main purge line hose. Again, this seems like a regular pipe we can splice and lengthen.

4) Then there is another un-identified hose that runs from the canister up to the fuel fill inlet on the side of the car. Actually this pipe is one of the two we actually cut off of the old fuel fill inlet and replace with yours. If we move the canister to where I mention below, then this will be a non-issue to splice and connect also.

5) Canister Pump Module Connector – This is a electrical connector with 7 wires. This is the only part of the whole project that scares both me and my mechanic. I am going to call Toyota on Monday and see where the other end of this connector goes to. If it is an inexpensive cable AND the ends are the same, MAYBE I can purchase an extra one and make it longer by just connecting in between the ends. If not, I will have to splice it. The only issue I have with this is that one of the wires has a resister in it. I would rather NOT take the chance of blowing the resister by making the wire longer, but if I use the same wire gauge, I should be ok.

Now the other issue is this.

From what we can see the only real area that is close and is big enough to mount the canister is between the frame and the outer metal behind the right tire.....exactly when I think you want us to put the transfer pump! Am I correct in thinking it is the same place? I was trying to see from the video, but I want to make sure.

Is there anywhere else to place the transfer pump?

Any other ideas on the canister would be VERY welcome!

WHEW....that is all the issues I can find so far

BTW does the tank, take into consideration the tow hitch wires that run along the underside of the rear frame? Are these going to get squashed by the tank and need to be moved?

The charcoal canister is part of the emissions system. I doubt that you would get regular shop that is willing to move the canister for you. I know we are not prepared to do it. Might be a simple thing to do but you are messing with the integrity of a fairly complex system and if it stops working as intended the shop will have a nightmare on their hands. Also adding the 2nd tank is going to be challenging in terms of the emissions system. Have a look at this site Fuel tank regulations for some more info on installing 2nd tanks etc.

I know you are right. Just promise me that your rear bumper will have a few places for gas cans!
