if i was to buy new I would likely do the same. i'm seriously thinking used though since I would not use it as a PDA just for GPS and memory map says you can use an ipaq a couple of generations back without issues.
please do a review here if you do try the demo. I need to get my research done in in time to put it on my christmas list
