the best fish I caught when I was trout fishing in North Georgia a couple of years ago was a red eyed bass... different names for different ppl for this fish. Around where I live they call it a Suwannee Bass (species of smallmouth).
Anyhoo... he came up and busted a dry and treated me like a red headed stepchild. He ran up and down through several pools (bottom slicker than seal snot)... Since I didn't expect anything bigger than about a 12" bow and the 'river' was tight and overgrown I was using a light 6' # 3 fly rod. He worked it out, and like you say was a different species of bass.
