Alternative Fuels

Sorry if this is a crazy question, but has anyone ever converted their 100 LC (or 80) to run on alternative fuels like Propane (LPG), CNG (compressed natural gas), etc? There might be a better place to post this thread, so I'm up for suggestions.
From a little research, it seems that there are several companies in europe, and the UK that have been doing these conversions for a few years now, but I haven't been able to find anything in the US. Thanks for any info!!

There is a UK member who has converted their 80 to LPG(?). I can't remember who, but I'm sure a search would turn it up. IIRC, it is economical there because of the price difference between petrol and LPG, but would not be as economical here in the US.

I dug this up from last year. Thought it might be good reading and worth considering.

Found some pictures of a dual fuel LPG/Petrol conversion to a 100 series. Is this economically feasible for Americans?

Its done alot in UK - more for tax reasons than economy. Petrol/diesel are taxed higly - LPG wasnt but thats changing- still in UK you were about a quarter ahead in cost per mile - but the conversion was about £1000-1500 In general you get 10-30% less economy. Lack of infrastructure in the US is the biggest hurdle. Not sure how you'd fill in the US - maybe theres LPG/CNG near you, maybe not

Good news is most conversions allow either use of Petrol or LPG. Good idae to run petrol every once and a while for gaskets/seals. Are there US distributers? Wondering about insurance as well. There were LPG converiosn done on school buses, or Propane maybe. Might start there.

Here in the US LPG is not that much cheaper than gasoline per gallon. Each gallon has fewer BTUs so really very little advantage to it for as a motor fuel.

What about that stuff called E38 or something like that it has a mix of gas with some corn byproduct.

E85? 85% Ethanol and 15% Gas -

Trouble is it takes more energy (on average) to grow the corn for the ethanol than it produces in energy as a fuel. It's a perpetual motion machine that makes no economic sense without government subsidies.

Great article on E85 in the latest Car and Driver - basically as NM notes with corn - although cellulosic production from switch grass and other feedstocks are much better. Still only half the efficiency of sugarcane - as Brazil uses. Succesful in Brazil becuase of this and because they use 10 billion barrels of oil (we use 140 for transporation) - this after 30 years of govt subsidies.

A few years back there was an article in Toyota Trails about a FJ40 running on propane.

I agree, quit blocking the import of sugarcane based Ethanol and stop propping up inefficient methods of production (e.g. corn).

Here in Argentina, about 80% of all road vehicles are running CNG. (99.99% of Taxi's)

I'm doing some research about converting my '03-100 to be bi-fuel. ie.. CNG and Unleaded. There are about 15 different companies that have converted everything from BMW's, Chevy's, Ford trucks and of course Toyota's Hilux. Hopefully this week I'll be visiting a shop to see what kits and technologies are being used on Toyota's nowadays and then I'll post the results to you all.

I plan on doing my conversion while I'm here for the next 3 years. Placing the tanks in the place of the spare tire. More to follow on this subject.

If research works out well, we can all benefit from it!

Regards.
