Roof Rack

I need a roof rack for my 1999 UZJ100. I am thinking ARB, and I emailed Slee about them. I am going on a ski trip to colorado and have a full car. Its first function will be to allow me to strap in luggage while going 70mph on highways. After that it will be a general rack. I was going to rig up something using an old thule system, but my dad didn't like what I had done, personally I think it was fine. What else is there?

Not sure if the ARB racks are even sold in the US anymore, something about takin up too much room in the shipping container, ARB USA can stuff alot more lockers in the same space as a rack.

Look at the MAF(Kaymar) Trademan or a Hanibal($$$$$$)

with ARB

clean

with Hannibal

For appearance, clean wins. For appearance with rack, the ARB wins. For performance with nice look, the Hannibal wins.

The Hannibal is well over $1k. The ARB will be tough to find. I helped 2 blokes find them at my local shop a few months ago. Not sure what they go for, but you'll have a hard time finding one probably. Clean was free since my truck never had the pos OEM rack on it.

I talked to one of the ARB reps on the phone and he confirmed that they are no longer importing the roof racks because of the space on container ships. I think it's a shame b/c it's the best rack by far in my opinion, and if a product is selling why stop selling it? When i ordered mine from him 8 months ago he said i got the last one . The thing is sturdy enough to set two lounge chairs on top and watch races!

Re:Roof Rack

Matt,

Have you thought about those "roof enemas"? That's what my wife calls the roof top cargo carriers that are aerodynamic looking! These things can hold a crap load of stuff, keep them dry and secure while keeping the wind noise down and impacting your mpg a little less than traditiional open racks. Some place even let you rent them for a small fee.

Just a thought.

A lot of them are sturdy enough for that.

If you really want an ARB rack, someone can order one for you. When I got the ARB commercial bar, it had been special ordered from OZ. Took awhile, but I got it.

For 2-500 quid, there ain't much. You can look at other alternatives though like ECB, custom etc. Heck about 2 years ago, I was considering making one out of Ti. I had a bunch of free Ti to do with what I wanted.

Some folks may consider that a lot of money for a rack, but then again, I use mine at least once a week. So it depends on what you need it for.

Mounting one on a 100? Dunno. Duct tape or carriage bolts?

Re:Roof Rack

[Cat out of the bag] We are set up as distributors for African Outback Products. First container on the way. They offer drawer systems and roofracks for the 80's and 100's. I have not updated the site yet, but see http://www.outbackproducts.com

The products are not cheap, but the quality is exceptional. The roofrack for the 100 series mounts to a new track that is attached to the factory track on the roof. The racks are all aluminum made from extruded aluminum. The extrusions features channels that accept captures nuts that can slide. So adding your own accessories and mounting stuff is super easy.

Inventory should be here in Feb.

Yakima makes roof racks that allows you to install a number of different types of carriers........ see <www.yakima.com>

Re:Roof Rack

I know alot of people dog yakima for off road use...But I have one on my 80, and if properly mounted, and tightened down, it can handle some ABUSE. We wheeled alot this summer in off camber situations just ramming that thing into pine trees, large braches, and it faired quite well. It will hold 200-300lbs...I would not go over that, but if you have a 100, are not planning on trashing it in the forest, you can get really set up for 300 bucks. I have kayaks, bikes, a large basket, and one of those molded plastic aerodynamic cargo gizmo's and they all come on and off easily, making it a snap to re-configure for different excursions. The caro holder is great for winter, and with 2 kids and a dog, space is always at a premium. I have hauled ass for days in a row down chattery dirt roads, nothing comes loose. Now I'd like something more bad ass for in the future...It would suck to break your rack on an outing..but for the money and functionality they are great. And I do like Yakima over Thule...but that's just an opinion.

You can do 3 rain gutter mounts per side with 3 cross bars, bolt anything to that crap and it's pretty stout.

Thanks for the input. I ended up getting an Yakima LoadWarrior. I bought it from a REI store and have it installed allready. It measures 44x39x6.5 and I ordered the extension, which will add 18 inches of length. It mounts to the factory crossbars. Right now it seems very stable, I will tell yall how it holds up on my trip to colorado under a good load. And now I am thinking...what a good place to mount lights....that sounds like a good afrer x-mas project.

looked at the basket on top of the factory rack type too. Seems OK, but the cross bars are sometimes pretty flexible and can only handle 150 lbs total per label. So not obvious that this is a good solution for weighty loads.
On the 100, the bars are pretty curvy as well. Cheaper though. Saw a decent looking one made by "BMG" IIRC. Oh yes, Thule has one as well.

considering I have 9 cars(6 of em full coverage), one boat, one house insured, total is just over 4k a year........which isn't really that bad...........considering : When I was younger I paid $250 a month for just one car.........I had a "few" tickets and stuff

Roof Rack (and plugging the factory holes)

I thought I'd dig up this thread (instead of starting a new one) to discuss how to fill the old holes in the roof from the factory rack. I tried a search because I know it's been discussed but I failed.

Anyway - what's the best way to fill these holes to ensure they don't leak and rust. I don't really care about looks that much since it's real hard to see up there.

I'm thinking I read to find some rubber plugs (not sure where) and use some black sealer to "glue" them in with.

ideas guys/gals? (hows that for PC ? : )

I don't have an answer for you Riley, but since your bringing this one back to the top, this is the perfect place to announce:

SLEE finally has info and prices on the new Roofracks and sliding cargo drawers, on his website, I think it was just updated today
It's too rich for my blood right now, but would love to have both.

That's actually why I'm asking how to fill the old holes.
Now I just need to slip this past my wife when she's not looking. That reminds me that I was going to post how my new cruiser fund plan back fired. I'll go post that on chit chat.

I used 5x1.00mm stainless steel phillips head countersunk screws and stainless steel rosette washers. I placed o-rings under the rosette washers and coated the screw threads and o-rings with silicone sealer.

>> and stainless steel rosette washers.<<

Not sure what a rosette washer is but I'll figure it out. Sounds like a much better way to seal them up compared to what I was thinking, thanks Dan.

I did something similar to Dan. For the 4 rails I used phillips head counter sunk 5mmx10mm screws and a rubber washer under them. For the rack towers I used a slightly domed flat head 5mmx12mm screw sealed with silicone. I plan to post pictures of this soon. As to why I used this combination... I don't really know, but I think it looks nice.

The rails were a pain to get off since they are connected to a plastic mounting rail that is held on by 3m automotive tape. It took a while to get off but I eventually got it. Used a lot of goof off to soften the tape/adhesive first.

One thing that still bothers me is that the roof has some ripples where the nutserts were inserted for the towers.

Derek - do you think it's important to get the rails off? I was going to leave them on but I guess I'm a little worried about the rust.

I guess I could go one step at a time.

Does it rust underthere?
