Gheto Painted Wheels Thread
Please only post your pics, and links to your threads on painted wheels. I spent last night and this morning searching and searching. Once finished I am hoping this will be a Sticky in FAQ.
Dupli Color Wheel Paint or VHT seem to be of choice.
My 99 is Black with the Smoke bottom, so I want the wheels to be smoke/black. I have painted wheels before, on my full time Rock Crawlers and if anything I have learned is this. You can spend a entire weekend, getting just that right show room shine or Black sheen only for it, to just get chipped off by some curb or rock. So then touch up comes and what do you do. If you powder coated, then well??? do you dismount or just mask and touch up??
Has anyone just done what I would call the Lazy just get it done process. Meaning you did sand some on the wheels, then masked off, and just went to Spraying from the Can. In my experience this does fairly well, then if you curb or rock rash the wheels, you just mask off and respray the wheel again or the area.
I have done this with Cheap Dollar Store Flatt Black paint, doesnt hold that well. So then I did with Dupli Color Wheel paint, held much better then...
I found Hammerite Paint... I did my last whole Rock Buggy in this paint, it sprays Black but actually dries a Grayish/Black in my opinion. Then as I rock rashed it, just spray the area, and wow it looked good. The texture of it, keeps it from looking like you just sprayed the area, or keeps from the shading effect going on. Plus it has a good matte sheen.
So post up your Gheto pictures and experiences.

Mine are powdercoated, when paint gets removed by rocks, I wipe with a damp rag and spray with matte black paint, no masking.

Krylon here. No pics of the 100 wheels yet. So far I've only done the two for the M416.
Same paint is holding up just fine on my beater 40 wheels though.

My game plan is to clean wheels, and do some light sanding, and then Spray away... Using Hammerite Gray... it dries... a Smokey Black, which blends good with the All Black ride.
I figure I will spray everything but the center caps for now... If I like, I will just hit those too.
Before everyone chims in it want last... Well it will as long as I have cans of spray paint... To actually breakdown, strip, sand, prime and paint... Just seems overkill for wheels that will get curbed and rock rashed... Just my opinion. And lastly before you post... I have painted many wheels, in my years... on my 85 Yota, I would wash it after ever ride, then break out a Can of Flatt Black, and re hit the wheels after ever outing... From 5 Feet they looked new... Up close looked like a Gheto, touch up...

if done right and using the right paint you wont have to worry that much about rash

If your gunna wheel the piss out of it and scuff the wheels. Just wipe it down and spray it. Or dont spray them at all so you dont have to touch them up. My rims are pretty much patches of touchup and sharpie. Looks great from 10 feet, any close you see chunks, scraped, pen, sharpie, electrical tape (just kidding) and all that shit. Ill redo them someday. And wont take the whole stripping/sanding 4 day method. Not worth the time just to get them dirty and banged up again.

Here are mine... painted them like 3 years ago with some Auto Zone rattle cans. They are holding up great.

here's my thread on ghetto painted wheels, similar to 2000UZJ's process 'cept mine are still holding up quite well (since he's been thrashing the piss out of his). Have gotten many compliments asking if they were professionally done, which is a lovely feeling.

Alright, well, I finally got tired of the scratched up rims and the fading black (well, crappy grayish-blackish bleached out look) color on my rims. I washed them down pretty good and did NO prep work and hit them with a can of flat black. Didn't even cover the tire and just sprayed everything. Looks the same as when I spent 4 days. I didn't take the rims off so I sprayed the lug nuts. So EVERYTHING is black. Pics from today. I'd assume if you want a quickie black rim, just spray it and if it gets scratched then touch up. As for peeling and flaking. I'll figure that out down the road... and as you can see in the post above, my rims were pretty banged up. So it was a pretty easy touch up considering the paint damage.
