trouble shooting the center locker

any ideas on double checking to see if the center locker is activating? i cant really tell if its locking, or just my light on my dash is out.

when yall start yall's cruiser, and all the dash lights come on for a few seconds, does the center locker light come on? mine doesnt. im a little reluctant to put it up on jackstands and start it up to see if it locks

Get on some loose dirt, put the truck in low range, and then engage the locker. Turn in a slight circle and see what happens. It may be that your truck needs the locker "execised" a bit if it hasn't been used at all. Turn the circle provides differentiation between the front and rear axles which gives the locker the chance to line up and lock. Being on dirt provides some slip in case things bind up.

I don't recall the CDL light lighting up on start, but I think the rear does?

Mine doesnt light up, but when you engage it the lights do pop up. Do what Trunk Monkey says. I actually need to exercise mine today. havent engaged it in a long time.

from memory if mine had been engaged when i switch off the engine, then it will re-engage when i start it up the next time.

i hadn't used mine for a long time until a few weeks ago (i posted some snow pics in the pic thread) but the "CDL engagement noise"....i couldn't really hear it...it was windy (gale force) and i had the radio on....happy to test it this weekend for you though.
Oh and the light is obscured by my Scanguage II mounted on the steering column.

As the Scanguage is a velcro attachment, i do check that there's no other warning lights on when i start it up (remove the ScanGuage II)....if i remember! Can't think where else to mount the scanguage tho!

But, before i had all that stuff, yes you could hear it engage because i stoppped, put it in neutral (manual gearbox here) and there was a noise, both engaging and disengaging. (radio/CD turned down or off tho)
cheers
peter

You can also just put it in low range. That automatically locks the center diff on my 98.

yep sure can.

but i think he's talking about the CDL switch...which i've accidently hit with my knee and engaged it.

let me try and find a pic on my RHD LC100.

ok here it is. you'll see my left knee, the Motorola phone charger at the time, and between them, up a bit youll see the CDL switch (what we are talking about here) and an empty switch holder and the emergency light switch.

I've hit it accidentally (engaged it) a few times.....usually while i'm f'ing around coz i've dropped something or some wildlife is in the beast (leeches, moths, whateve Oz wildlife if you leave the window open...f'ing huntsman spiders are the worst for scary moments in suburbia, let alone the bush...meh) or whatever. The scanguage ii where i have it obscures any of the lights/warnings that are there, so i am going to move it in case something lights up and i drive on into a breakdown.
Enjoy!

cheers
peter

i hear my rear locker engage/disengage, i cant remember if ive heard my center though. the last time i used it (and both the locker and the light worked) was for a 4th of July trip this past summer. the second time i tried to use it was in august when at a buddies camp and hit some mud, first time i noticed the locker light did not come on. im gunna go find some dirt and check the turning radius trick

btw, my rear locker light does come on during start up, which confuses me as to why either a) the center light doesnt come on or B) mine is burnt out.

ive also done the 7pin mod

Slow wide turns on pavement will let you know real quick if the center is locked. I had to do this recently, my center diff light wasn't coming on, but it was def locked. I gave the dash a smack and the center diff light, and D light, now work as expected.

IIRC, the 98-99's require the pin-7 mod to disengage the CDL in LO. But anything '00+ came with the ability from the factory.
