My transmission has started throwing P0770 codes. Dealer diagnosed it as the torque converter lock up solenoid reading open and said they would fix it by replacing the transmission.
2000 Land Cruiser, July manufacture date with 143K miles on it.
Other than throwing the code, transmission seems very solid.
Decided I would replace the solenoid, so looking at the manual need to drop the pan and pull the value body. Manual makes it seem pretty straight forward. Now if 10 check balls come flying out when I drop the value body that would not be fun.
Will get a better picture of transmission once I drop the pan by how much metal is in it.
Looks like I will need the solenoid and yet to be determined gaskets.
Any recommendations on what else I should consider replacing while I am in there.

Please take lots of pictures and do a write up.

Do you have the AT manual ( # RM479u) ?

It doesn't have too much info (zero diagnostics!) but I was able to get one from my parts department for ~$15.

- The Lock up solenoid shows an non-reusable o-ring.
- You may want to have replacement lock-up valve parts in case it is the valve and not just the solenoid.
- There is a small solenoid strainer as well.

I don't have the AT Manual, so will look into getting it.
I have a PDF someone posted here of some pages of a manual on AT, top of pages have "Automatic Transmission - Component Parts Installation" on them. Pages are AT-78 - AT-100.
The regular FSM seems to have enough information for this job.

There are a number of solenoid valves and a temperature sensor, if any of these are known to wear out, let me know. Would replace them all but the $80-250 price each gives me pause.

For that money I doubt it's worth replacing them as a preventive. If you get over $500 in parts then I would consider getting a reworked valve body from someone like Wholesale Automatics. Not because you'll actually need one but because they sound great and no one on the board has run one.

I would really like to see what, if anything, is in the strainer and what the screen or material inside is.

I wouldn't bother with the AT manual. The FSM and the PDF you have have almost everything relevant.

Have few photo of pan and bottom of transmission. I am assuming this is a normal amount of metal shavings. The one wire like piece makes me wonder. Need to now match up what is wrong with a part number. Seem FSM and Parts diagrams have different names. I seem to only have 3 magnets and a gasket rather than FIPG material.
Let me know if there something I need to be concerned about.

great photos. The wire looks like a cut-off piece of 'safety wire' way too big to be a 'wear product'. The collection of fine wear metal looks normal--no large chunks or lots of debris--cleanliness is EXCELLENT. Good job on keeping fluid changed before it starts leaving varnish.

Should be straightforward. MUST have 'exploded' diagram of valve body and detailed description is dis-assembly and reassembly instructions B4 you take it apart.
