I think the consensus here [and on Yotatech when I owned a 4Runner] is that the best filter is an OEM filter. YMMV.

There is a fairly standard filter that is compatible for diameter and threads with a longer can. I'm sure some searching will produce the thread.

These engines are so easy on oil and produce such great numbers on UOAs that I'm not sure there is much demand for more filter. The OEM Toyota filter is quality when torn apart and it's can is actually about half an inch longer than many of the aftermarket brands. They also have the pre-lubed o-ring style gasket and plastic shipping cover.

Wix over the Fram but for that price range I would stick with the Toyota YDDZ3. If you want the best oil filter out there and are willing to pay a premium then get an Amsoil EaO [EaO57 or EaO34(M201 size)] .
Note the M209 (Mobil1) and Ea034 are the larger filters you may be interested in and they have a equivalent in every filter line. Right it up if you try them.

From another thread ...

Amsoil had a new bulletin stating that the Ea057 is no longer recommended for the Hundy.

Anyone here used Amsoil's 0W30?

Yes, I assume it was a good oil for the 10k or so I ran it. I now run Mobil1 because it is cheap and easy to get.

You can also use the really big old school Toyota filters as well on the 2UZ-FE: 15600-41010

Will those fit? I didn't think they would dimensionally. I still have a couple from my old 80s, would love to use them if I could.

Hey Derek--

Not sure if the dimensional aspect would work with the 2UZ-FE. I just know that that it will screw on.

Give it a shot.

41010s don't fit around the lower brace and oil drip.

OK, that's what I thought. I am currently using the 90915-20004, and also have a few of the YZZD3s floating around.

Are these the little taller made in Japan filters?

I use the 909215-20004 made in Japan factory filters on both by 2UZ and 3UZ. On the outside, they look the same as the made in Thailand YDZZ3 filters, but inside is completely different (I think Cary posted pics in a thread way back). PS: the V8 filters also fit 22re engines. I suspect they will fit any toyota. A coworker's FJ cruiser came w/ the -20004 filter, and it has the 4.0L V6 1GR-FE engine. I *suspect* they will fit any modern toyota engine.
