Which brand of locker would you install?
ARB or TJM?
I have a feeling it's going to lean towards ARB.
Since blowing my diffs, the last two times I wheeled, I was very tenative of giving it too much right foot.
Looking at pricing now for just front and both front and rear.
For some reason, I don't think the Boss will find it Recession friendly though...

In a 100 series? An ARB, because there are no other options.

You've blown two front diffs? Did you get completely new diff each time or just replace internals? Why did you not upgrade to a front locker the first time? I am in the same situation right now trying to decide what to do.

I blew the front. Upon inspection, Toyota said I blew the t-case too. Both were replaced. New front, used t-case. Once it was back together, the rear was making noise. The rear was replaced with a new one. All a month out of warranty. A very expensive lesson.

TJM doesn't make lockers and as rpbiz pointed out, ARB's the only option available. Slee posted in some other thread recently that front and rear and install is around $5k.

ARB- tried and true. How can you improve a locker that doesn't fail?
TJM- new guy on the block, un-tested design and materials.
My vote is obviously for ARB Air Locker front and rear.

Agreed. I've always been a TJM fan:
TJM - Serious 4WD Equipment > Products > Products Parent > Pro Locker
But since they're outta here, ARB it is.
Gotta save up some funds for this one.

Actually, the TJM locker is rumored to be a rebadged Jack McNamara locking diff which is supposedly over 20 years old and has proven reliable. But still I would go ARB since installers here are familiar with it and parts are available.

$5k would get you arb locker, custom hybrid rear locker, Aftermarket gears, compresser, bearings, seals, labor, sales tax, etc. It would be much less $$ to install arb's or an arb without regearing.

What is an estimate for just arbs front and rear without regearing, can you get that done for 3000 or less?

I locked both my rigs for under $3000 (labor included). Got a free ARB compressor each time as well. Promo on the free compressor right now in fact.

$5k pricing is doing it right with Toyota switches, all new Toyota parts in diff, including all bolts, nuts, bearings etc etc. Without comparing details, you can not compare prices.

LX450 was done only 2-years ago. Not including the 4.88 gears it was under $3000 including labor and Toyota gaskets, parts, etc. I know the lockers are up a bit now. I paid $787 then per locker and got the free compressor. What are they now? $920 or something and with a free compressor. Add $260 and we're about $3100-3200 in 2009.

You can not compare a 80 with a 100. The parts are more as well as labor to make the rear work. Do you even know what parts they replaced inside the thirds. Also how was wiring done, etc etc

What's the best way to do the switches?
Slee - Do you use OEM Toyota or ARB for the switch?
Any pics of a nice and clean install?
thanks

If you regear...yes.
We're talking about adding lockers.

If you add lockers, you still remove the ring gear from the carrier and you might need new carrier bearings. If you don't know the details, don't compare prices. Re-using diff bolts etc is a shortcut.
There are many ways to skin this cat, some are cheap and nasty.

We use Toyota switches, and depending on year model, we will also integrate the lights on the dash, if available.

The OEM switch makes for a very clean install. That's how I did mine.

There are many ways to add things onto a job that can increase the price dramatically that some folks simply don't need.........
*Locker dash lights (the ARB's lock instantly anyhow)
*Toyota OEM locker switch
*Etc.
Neither of my locker jobs were "cheap and nasty" as time has told. The 100 has had zero ARB issues in 5-years. They hold air for several days before the compressor even kicks in.
Insinuating that about $3000K is a "nasty and cheap" locker install is not fair to the readers. Here's what it took on 1/28/2006 for example:
$780.00...labor (2 lockers w'gears and compressor w'wiring)
$0.00...Large Toyota rear carrier bearing
$1580...two ARB lockers
$0.00...Free ARB compressor offer
$112...Misc Toyotal seal kits/parts
$225...Tapered ponion package
$239...Master O/H Toyota kit
(Gears were $486 and we won't add them in)
TOTAL COST...$2936 COMPLETE
Now...add in today's higher locker price...You're at about $32-3300. For cry from $5K. And I will say, those ARB illuminated locker switches look sweet! Easier to turn on and off as well.
If somebody else wants to add all kinds of other stuff (OEM switch, locker lights) then let them, but don't tell everyone they need to. If somebody has a unique situation and needs to replace worn out parts, then that's cool as well and the price goes higher. To lead people to think it can't be done for a tad over $3K is misleading IMO. Plenty of us need just the parts and labor.
