Remote start w/ 1 Keyfob possible?

Want to add remote start to my 98', but would like to have 1 keyfob

any ideas?

Check out autopage systems (Auto Page Vehicle Security Alarm Systems - Car Alarms, Remote Starters, Keyless Entry. )I have a remote start on my 98 - one remote - works the locks and starter. You do have to zip tie a key under the dash so the remote start will work.

Not saying it'll happen to you, but I had a CrimeStopper remote start/alarm on my 80 that caused a problem.

The vibrations from off-roading caused a voltage flux or something and damaged the brain, causing it to intermittenly cut fuel to the injectors (it's security feature if it thinks someone's trying to steal the truck). It was completely intermitten and random, and acted just like a bad fuel pump, which was replaced with no improvement. I was about to begin replacing injectors until an ASE-certified friend got involved with his multimeter and found the issue.

Ripped out the remote start/alarm, truck ran great from that day until I sold it. Not trying to discourage you, but if you go off-road and your truck starts acting like the fuel pump or an injector has gone, double-check the remote/alarm system.

Since I've had this happen to me I'm not going to put one on my 100-- the whole once-bitten, twice-shy thing. I do miss being able to leave it locked & running for short periods, though.

Had an Autopage system on my 80 - loved it. Off-roaded it plenty with no issues. Had I been smarter I would have installed one on my 100 rather than spending $80 for another OEM key with button head.

Sneaky on zip tying the key, I didn't think about how you'd defeat the transponder. I guess you could make it safe and cut the key part off, just leave the head of the key under there.

I have not had any issue with the Autopage system - my 100 has been offroaded pretty hard (washboard rads at 60mph or more for extended periods of length - you have to love Utah's west dessert!) PO trip to Baja Mexico - broken window but no remote start issues.

Zip tie has worked perfect - not my idea - Wasatch Cruiser's Master Tech came up with it - and the key is so far up under my dash - no one will ever find it - in fact I had a very hard time locating it to show someone it was there - so they could copy the install idea.

Only complaint with Autopage is the plastic ring that holds the keyfobs onto your key chain have broken. But you can order replacements on their website fairly cheap.

I've got a remote start and there was no need to install a key under the dash. My guess is if it gets installed by someone with installation experience, it's not necessary to strap a key. Sounds like placing a key under the dash, albeit well hidden, is a bad idea.

Security transponder's got to get a signal from somewhere if you're not there and hit the remote start, having a key hidden is a great idea. And provides emergency access to a key if the need should arise.

And when utah62 says WC's Master Tech, he means a real Toyota certified Master Tech, so I'd hope he knows what he's doing.

You can easily get remote start add to your truck,I have one which i installed myself,with no problem. If you get one install go with DEi,then have a bypass box with a tranponder loop that goes over the key cylinder barrel and the key goes in the box. Make sure they ground down the key so it will not start the truck if they find the box. Don't let them put the alarm brain under the dash by the steering wheel hide it some where else so no one can find it.

well now that its posted on the internet that utahfj62's 100 has a key in it at all time, i wonder what will happen?

There's a provision for bypassing the transponder with a properly installed remote start. On my install, there's no key shoved under the dash somewhere. If the truck is running and the brake pedal is depressed to shift into gear, if the key isn't in the ignition with transponder, the truck shuts off. I guess if you don't know how to bypass the transponder, then plan B is to stick a key under the dash. Of course, if someone wants to steal the truck and they come across the hidden key, makes things real easy.

I have the same setup. No key in ignition and you depress the brake pedal - the truck shuts down.

If someone can find the key under the dash - and make it work - they can have the truck. I never said it was a cut key under the dash - it is a blank - not cut.
